Whether you have extremely large breast that you would like to get reduced, or you have sagging breast you would like to have lifted, you experience the same amount of scarring. However similar both procedures are to each other, they yield very different results. Only an experienced Board Certified Plastic Surgeon will be able to determine which procedure would best benefit you. If you are happy with the size of your breast but are unhappy with the way they sag, then a breast lift (mastopexy) would best benefit you. During a mastopexy, depending on the severity of the sagging, the surgeon may use a “lollipop” incision or an “anchor” incision. The surgeon will then proceed to remove the excess skin allowing your breast to sag. Once the excess skin has been removed, the nipple is repositioned and the incision is stitched closed resulting upright breast that are only smaller from your pre-op size.
However, if you have extremely large breast and would like to get them reduced, then a breast reduction would be best. In a reduction the surgeon will use an anchor incision to not only remove excess skin but it will also remove excess breast tissue. Once the excess tissue has been removed, the surgeon will reshape and lift the remaining breast tissue and stitch the incision closed. This will result in upright breast that are significantly smaller than their pre-op size.
