Many people are interested in tummy tuck surgery to remove excess pockets of fat and skin that develop after pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and the natural aging process.
While these conditions are great reasons to consider a tummy tuck, they are not the only reasons you can to turn to the procedure.
1. Corrects Muscle Separation
Nearly 60 percent of women experience diastasis recti following one or more pregnancies. This is the separation of the abdominal muscles.
Not all women realize that the abdominal muscles are situated in two sections that are usually separated from each other by a finger’s width distance. During pregnancy, the expanding uterus can cause a permanent break between these two abdominal muscles.
For women with moderate to severe diastasis recti, a tummy tuck is the only practice that can successfully tighten loose or separated muscles.
2. Eases Back Pain
Muscle weakness caused by diastasis recti places extra pressure on the back, and many women experience moderate to significant lower back pain following the birth of their children.
Since tummy tuck surgery tightens and strengthens the abdominal muscles, the tension on the back is lessened, which results in less pain and discomfort.
3. Allows Patients to Wear Tighter Clothing
Lower belly pooches that result from pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and aging can compel many women to hide their abdomens with loose-fitting or flowy clothing.
Tummy tuck surgery tightens the contours of the midsection, allowing women to choose tighter or form-fitting clothing.
By removing excess fat and skin and tightening loose muscles, patients can fit more comfortably and confidently into their wardrobes.
4. Eases Exercising
Patients who consider tummy tuck surgery after extreme weight loss commonly choose the procedure because the extent of skin laxity makes activities like exercising difficult.
Excess skin can interfere with your range of motion and chafe, causing unneeded discomfort.
5. Improves Posture
The pressure placed on the back after pregnancy or weight loss does not only cause lower back discomfort, but it also impacts your posture.
Weak abdominal muscles are often linked with swayback, which is the inward curving of the lower back.
Tightening the abdomen through a tummy tuck improves posture because it supports the spine by strengthening the core and the back.
6. Reduces Urinary Incontinence
Some women experience and suffer from stress urinary incontinence (SUI) following childbirth, especially after a vaginal birth because of the pressure placed on the bladder.
SUI can occur at any time, but it is commonly brought on by exercising, sneezing, coughing, and laughing.
Tummy tuck surgery creates a minor bladder obstruction near the pelvis, which reduces stress urinary incontinence.
7. Repairs Ventral Hernias
A ventral hernia is caused by a tissue break in the abdominal wall. This break forms a pocket, which can only be repaired through surgery.
Ventral hernias develop after weight loss, C-sections, or appendectomies.
While patients can undergo hernia surgery, tummy tuck surgery also repairs a ventral hernia and comes with additional health and cosmetic benefits.
Tummy tuck surgery strengthens the abdominal wall and prevents future hernias from developing.
